Israel’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs compared efforts to deport illegal foreign workers to the ritual of burning chametz, or leavened bread, which is ritual traditionally performed before the Passover holiday. An Israeli organization working to protect the rights of foreign workers said the comparison was racist. The ministry said in a statement that police and ministry officials had issued deportation orders to 97 illegal foreign workers in Eilat, the southern resort town.
