Israel’s recent takeover of the Lebanese village of Arnoun ended an American mediation effort to station Lebanese police in the town, according to the Israeli daily Ha’aretz. The paper reported Tuesday that the move by the Israeli army circumvented the American effort, which the Lebanese government had been prepared to support. The death of an Israeli army soldier in a roadside explosion in Lebanon last week prompted Israel’s Security Cabinet to take over the Lebanese village and extend its security zone in Lebanon, rather than await the results of the American mediation.
