Rep. Seymour Halpern, New York Republican, today told the House that Israel’s role in the Robert Soblen extradition issue had emerged as “understandable,” He said he was confident “history will exonerate Israel.”

He said that Israel had been blamed “unilaterally” in the Soblen affair when there “were legitimate questions about actions of other nations involved.” He noted that “the United States marshals failed to maintain proper surveillance over Soblen” and “the British piously sought to evade responsibility.” He pointed out that Soblen escaped from New York in the first place because the Justice Department neglected to issue a “stop order” to prevent his exit.
