The suggestion that Israel be admitted to the British Commonwealth of nations and thus be assured the certainty of peace was made here last night by James de Rothschild, former Liberal MP, at a dinner of the Anglo-Israel Association.
Mr. Rothschild, who criticized those in Israel who spoke of a “preventive” war, admitted that the Tripartite Declaration was now “nothing but a bit of rumpled papyrus” because it had undertaken to keep armaments in the Middle East balanced and had failed to do so. Another speaker at the dinner was Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath.
The Agudas Israel organization in Britain expressed its complete support of the State and people of Israel in the current Middle East crisis in a resolution adopted today by its executive. The organization will also cable an appeal to British Foreign Secretary Harold Macmillan in Geneva asking him to take action to prevent the flow of arms to Egypt or other Arab states.
