The lay Council of the Chief Rabbinate of Istanbul has elected Dr. Samuel Abrevaya, 71-year-old communal leader, president of the city’s Jewish Community.
Dr. Abrevaya, who favors the affiliation of the community with the World Jewish Congress, said that an application for membership in the Congress would shortly be made by his body. Until earlier this year Turkish Jewry–like other minority groups–was forbidden by law from affiliating with any organization abroad.
