The Italian Government has been asked by the United States to provide temporary shelter for 25,000 Jewish refugees now in Austria, it was learned here today. Under the proposal none of the costs would be borne by Italy.
The U.S. note suggested that the 25,000 displaced persons could be housed in former UNRRA camps at Milan and Bari, which are not occupied at present.
Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson confirmed at his press conference that the State Department had cabled such a request to Rome several days ago, but said it has not yet received any reply.
The Italian Embassy here said that they had no information concerning the U.S. note, but would institute inquiries as to what action Rome plans to take.
