Jewish leaders and rabbis were today considering a protest to Premier Benito Mussolini against the unprecedented refusal by Count Cesare de Vecchi, Minister of Public Education, to permit publication of special text books for Jewish schools which would omit the Catholic religious references contained in books published by the Government.
Permission for such publication, cost of which has always been defrayed by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, has been granted without question in previous years.
Failure to grant the permission is interpreted by Jewish leaders as a blow to the principle of full equality, since it forces Jewish schools to use books containing many passages devoted to another religion.
