A cautious warning against Catholic Church interference in Italian public schools was sounded here by Minister of Education Dr. Paolo Rossi during a debate on education in the Italian Senate. Religious minorities in Italy had frequently complained of such interference, which they term a violation of the Italian Constitution.
Granting the Italian Government’s recognition of the primacy of the Catholic religion in Italy, Dr. Rossi noted, however, that the Constitution guarantees full religious freedom and that in educational matters the state must establish general rules in the interests of all its citizens. Any violation of this right of the state, he said, endangered “culture, internal peace and freedom.”
