West German authorities set in motion today machinery to secure the return to this country of Ludwig Zind, the ex-Nazi school teacher who escaped from custody after his conviction in Offenburg in 1958 on charges involving anti-Semitism, and successfully played hide-and-seek with the German police since.
Zind was arrested in Naples as he sought to board a steamer for Tripoli, and is being held by the Italian police at the request of the West German authorities.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said today that as a preliminary to extradition proceedings, the verdict of the Offenburg court which found the chemistry teacher guilty and sentenced him to a year’s imprisonment would be transmitted to Rome. Formal extradition proceedings, it was stated, would be opened after the Italian authorities have reviewed the legal grounds.
