Premier and Foreign Minister Amintore Fanfani, concluding a foreign policy debate in the Italian Senate this week-end, announced his intention of visiting Israel as well as the United Arab Republic and stressed that his government hopes to strengthen its traditional policies of friendship with Israel and the Arab states while at the same time holding fast to its Western alliances.
The Premier noted that his government’s activities in the Middle Eastern theatre were being followed with interest by Israel, the Arab states and United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. He emphasized that Italy had “never suggested” its services as mediator and owed its success to the “frankness and clarity” with which it had stated its position.
