While hundreds of Jewish refugees from Germany have recently been admitted to Italy on temporary permits, the Government has started a new drive against foreign Jews who remained in Italy after the March 12 expulsion deadline.
Many hundreds of foreign Jews have received police orders to leave the country within one to four weeks. Informed circles anticipate that all foreign Jews, whose number is now estimated at 3,000, with the exception of a few who have succeeded in obtaining prolongation of their stay, will be requested by the police to leave Italy immediately. Among those served with police orders are many Hungarian Jews who had hitherto not been molested.
