A report that the Italian Government has formally recognized Israel was published today in the newspaper “Il Giornale Della Sera.” The foreign Ministry refused to confirm or deny the report, but said that an official being prepared.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman indicated here during the week-end that Italy is prepared to recognize the state of Israel as soon as recognition is extended by Britain art France. Meanwhile, it has extended diplomatic recognition to the Israeli consul in last November vas authorized to engage in consular activities which have consisted chiefly of issuing visas. He was also permitted to fly the Israeli flag over his office.
