(By our Pittsburgh Correspondent) Pittsburgh Police on Trail of Synagogue Desecrators
1,482 persons have been added to the membership roster of the Young Men’s and Women’s Hebrew Association of Pittsburgh, as a result of a two weeks’ drive held recently, according to Eugene Herzog, chairman of the enrollment campaign. This unanticipated success added approximately $24,000 to the “Y” treasury.
Police and private detectives of this city are searching for the thieves who, sometime last week, entered and ransacked the Congregation Poale Zedeck, damaging the synagogue to the extent of $1,700. The rear door behind the altar was chopped out, prayer books, and pews destroyed, and taleisim valued at $700 stolen. For the last six months similar occurrences have been reported to the police.
Miss Anna B. Heldman, for twenty-five years a worker in the Irene Kaufman Settlement of Pittsburgh, and at present head of the Personal Service department of that institution, was tendered a reception recently in honor of her untiring efforts in the interests of the social center. Messages from all over the United States were received by Miss Heldman. Miss Heldman was one of hte pioneer social workers of the city.
