“I have studied many of the great men of the past and the present,” Emil Ludwig goes on. “I have never found an anti-Semite among them. What Bismarck said in 1892 is known to everybody. In addition, for five years he had a Jew as his doctor, and for thirty years a Jew as his banker, so that he entrusted both his health and his fortune to Jews.
“In Goethe there are four passages in which he compares the Jews with the Germans. I have quoted them in an anthology. From Mussolini, Masaryk, Briand, Nansen, Edison, I have never heard anything but respect for the gifts and the character of the Jews. It is only in Germany that this pest dominates. If anyone compares the great number of cultural treasures which a million Jewish Germans have procured with those produced by the 61 million Aryan Germans, it will be seen that the Germans must put a spurt on to attain equality. We can fight this disease only if we rigidly exclude those from us who proclaim that they want to exclude themselves from us.”
