The Joint Distribution Committee provided health, welfare, emigration, cultural, educational and religious services this year for about 183,000 Jews in more than 25 countries of Europe, North Africa and the Near East, including Israel, it was announced here today by Edward M.M. Warburg, JDC chairman. The announcement was made in connection with the forthcoming 43rd annual meeting of the organization which will take place next Thursday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Mr. Warburg also announced that George L. Warren, adviser on refugees and displaced persons in the Department of State, will address the dinner held in conjunction with the annual meeting. Also featured on the program will be Moses A. Leavitt, JDC executive vice chairman who has been surveying health and welfare needs of Jews in South America, Europe and Israel. Mr. Leavitt is chairman of the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Service, and was a member of President Eisenhower Committee for Hungarian Refugee Relief.
At business sessions earlier in the day, delegates from every section of the United States will consider and adopt a budget for the JDC 1958 programs in various parts of the world. High on the agenda will be a report by Charles H. Jordan, JDC director-general for overseas operations, on the agency’s aid to Jewish refugees from Egypt and Hungary and on the resumption of a JDC welfare program in Poland for Jews recently repatriated from the Soviet Union.
