The Joint Distribution Committee today announced that approximately 70,000 Jewish children in Europe and North Africa will celebrate the eight-day Hanukkah festival–which begins Thursday at sundown–thanks to aid sent through the J.D.C. A special allocation of holiday toys, plus extra rations of milk and other foods, has been completed in 22 countries, the announcement said.
The National Jewish Welfare Board reported that thousands of Jewish servicemen as well as hospitalized veterans will mark Hanukkah in some 500 military installations and V.A. hospitals. Numerous holiday gifts have been prepared by women’s groups affiliated with the J.W.B. for shipment to Jewish members of the armed forces.
The Synagogue Council of America, in a Hanukkah message issued today, said: “As we kindle the Hanukkah lights, we must bear in mind the continuing obligation to champion freedom of conscience for ourselves and for all mankind. With the right to freedom of worship must go likewise the sense of the duty of worship.”
