A call to American Jews to collect and contribute urgently-needed relief supplies–foodstuffs, medicines and comfort items–to be sent suffering Jews overseas was issued today by Paul Baerwald, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee.
At the same time, Mr. Baerwald revealed that preliminary plans have been made by the J.D.C. in cooperation with national Jewish organizations, including eight women’s groups, for the establishment of a National Jewish Overseas Relief Supplies Collection which will seek to collect several million dollars worth of relief in kind to supplement the J.D.C.’s regular relief and rehabilitation programs.
Dr. Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C.,today announced that an understanding has been reached between his organization and the American Federation of Polish Jews under which relief funds collected by the latter will be made available to the Joint Distribution Committee. Under the terms of the arrangement, the Federation will allocate monies for specific relief and rehabilitation projects in behalf of Polish Jews, such projects to be decided upon by mutual agreement between the J.D.C. and the Federation.
