J.D.C. Calls Conference of Jewish Leaders to Discuss Relief Problems

Declaring that the present Jewish world tragedy transcends all past needs, Paul Baerwald, honorary chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, announced today that leaders of American Jewry, representing communities throughout the United States, will gather on Sunday, December 5, at the Commodore Hotel here to confer with the officers of the J.D.C. on the problems of immediate and post-war rescue and rehabilitation of millions of Jewish sufferers from war and persecution overseas. The meeting, he declared, will provide for American Jews “a forthright answer to their many questions as to what can be done in general and how the J.D.C., in particular, can enlarge its services to meet present and future needs.”

“The realities of the world situation,” Mr. Baerwald asserted, “demand a constructive approach to the problems of bringing relief and emigration aid to the Jews of Europe. We who deal day in and day out with Jewish needs all over the globe are continually aware that good will and brave resolutions alone will not solace a tearful mother or a hungry child. Shortages of supplies, lack of shipping space, and restrictions which the very war itself imposes are tangible things which the J.D.C., or any other realistic agency in the field, comes up against daily. But despite these handicaps the record shows that J.D.C. work is on the increase.”
