United States Ambassador C. Douglas Dillon today deplored the fact that the services of the Joint Distribution Committee were no longer available to Jews in the Communist countries, despite the great need which exists in those countries. His statements were made in the course of an address to the opening session of the five-day ninth annual JDC country directors conference at UNESCO House here.
“It is a reflection of the closed totalitarian mind, “Mr. Dillon said, “that the JDC was obliged to leave Rumania, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary although your workers studiously refrained from any political activities. ” The conference will hear reports by the directors of JDC welfare programs in 21 countries of Europe, North Africa, Asia and South America and will set plans for next year’s activities.
