A global review of Jewish relief, rescue and rehabilitation needs will begin here Sunday at the eighth postwar conference of Joint Distribution Committee field directors. JDC representatives from 18 countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East are scheduled to report to the parley, which will last until next Thursday. Special guests of the conference will be a delegation of 25 American Jewish community leaders headed by Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.
In a statement issued here today, JDC director general Moses Beckelman reported that the organization had appropriated $18,270,000 during the first ten months of the year for assistance operations on three continents. This sum, he pointed out, is nearly $1,400,000 higher than the amount allocated by the JDC during the same period last year.
Three major questions will confront the conference: 1. Israel – how can the JDC best meet the needs of thousands of sick, aged and handicapped immigrants who have not yet been reached by the agency’s Malben program there? 2. Moslem countries – how can the JDC’s programs of health care, education, food relief and economic aid be expanded? 3. Europe – how can the JDC speed the growing trend of the surviving Jewish communities on the Continent to meet their own welfare needs, thus freeing JDC funds for more urgent programs in other areas.
