Social welfare experts from 10 countries on three continents met here today at the overseas headquarters of the Joint Distribution Committee for a five-day meeting at which social service problems affecting Jewish communities in Israel, Europe and several Moslem countries will be examined.
Because of the widespread poverty among Jews living in virtual ghettoes in Moslem countries, the problems are of such “enormous proportions” that no individual voluntary agency can cope with them, Charles Jordan, director-general of the JDC, told the conference. “All we can hope to do in those areas,” Mr. Jordan stated, “is to work through the already-existing community organizations in those areas.”
Miss Mary Palevsky, director of the JDC department of social service, reported that her department provides not only medical, educational and other services but operates also economic rehabilitation and community development programs.
