The Joint Distribution Committee presented twenty-five Torahs to synagogues in Belgium in order to enable the Jews there to conduct services during the High Holidays, it was announced here today by Dr. Joseph Schwartz, J.D.C. European director.
Hundreds of religious articles, including prayer shawls and shofars, were sent by the J.D.C. to synagogues in Germany, Poland and other countries to replace those destroyed by the Maxis. In addition, the J.D.C. sent a special train with $500,000 worth of meat, vegetables, fruit, dairy products and chocolate to needy Jews in Poland for the High Holidays. Similar transports were also sent to Jews in Hungary, Germany, Austria and Slovakia.
Dr. Schwartz revealed that in Vienna, the American Army donated 22 tons of food to supplement the J.D.C. supplies. In Bratislava, the J.D.C. opened a special Kosher kitchen to provide thousands of meals for the Polish Jews passing through the city on route from Poland to the American zone of Germany.
