The Joint Distribution Committee today announced that it has sent Kurt Peiser, well known welfare executive, to North Africa to organize increased aid for refugees there and assist the native Jewish population of Tunisia.
Mr. Peiser sailed from an Eastern seaport for Lisbon together with Joseph J. Schwartz, chief of the J.D.C. work in Europe. From Lisbon he will proceed to North Africa to carry on relief activities there. Mr. Peiser has taken a leave of absence from his position as executive director of the Federation of Jewish Charities of Philadelphia to join the overseas staff of the Joint Distribution Committee on a volunteer basis. In conjunction with Dr. Schwartz, he will also consult with and advise the local relief committees in Casablanca and Algiers, through which the Joint Distribution Committee has been operating for the past two years on behalf of native and refugee Jews.
“During Mr. Peiser’s stay in North Africa his services will be available to Governor Lehman’s Office of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation Operations, to which the J.D.C. recently gave an initial sum of $25,000 for non-sectarian work in North Africa,” Mr. Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C., declared. He disclosed that refugees are being released from camps on the basis of maintenance guarantees which the Committee gives.
