More than $450,000 a month is now being spent by the Joint Distribution Committee on behalf of Hungarian refugees in Austria, Moses A. Leavitt executive vice chairman of the JDC and member of President Eisenhower’s Committee on Hungarian Refugee Relief reported here today upon his return from a two-week survey of aid being provided for Jewish refugees from Hungary and Egypt.

Mr. Leavitt, who will report his findings at a forthcoming meeting of the President’s Committee, said that there are today about 12,000 Jewish refugees from Hungary in Austria and that their number is increasing by 50 new arrivals every day. He warned that a new and ugly DP era is in the making unless the emigration of Hungarian refugees is promptly and greatly accelerated.

Mr. Leavitt also reported on the Jews expelled from Egypt whom he met upon their arrival last week in Naples. He said that there is no doubt that the Egyptian Government has currently undertaken to expel all Jews from Egypt, whether they are stateless or hold Egyptian or foreign citizenship. “There is every indication that during 1957 there will be a minimum of 100,000 Jewish refugees, harassed, penniless and completely dependent upon outside assistance for their survival,” Mr. Leavitt predicted.

Some 25,000 Jews half of the Jewish population remaining in Poland, have applied fore emigration visas the Vienna press reports today. The reports note that Jewish circles in Poland feel that the country holds no future for them and their families.)
