The Joint Distribution Committee has taken over relief activities in the detention camps on Cyprus for the Jews diverted from Palestine, Charles Passman, J. D. C. representative in Palestine, told a press conference today.
He added that he has submitted a report to the New York headquarters of the organization outlining an extensive relief program including the providing of clothes, religious, medical and educational services. Physicians, nurses and teachers for the camps will be recruited only from Palestine and will work under the supervision of British civil and military authorities, Passman said.
He estimated that there were 2,850 refugees on Cyprus including 215 pregnant women and 250 children. The majority of the children come from Greece and include 80 orphans and 35 infants.
