The 14,000 Jewish refugees in Shanghai who are being cared for by the Joint Distribution Committee will continue to be assisted in accordance with provisions made before the outbreak of war in the Pacific, it was announced here today by Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C.
Mr. Hyman disclosed that several weeks ago the Shanghai representatives of the J.D.C. were authorized, in the event of a breakdown of communications between New York and Shanghai, to spend up to the equivalent of two months’ appropriation. This will carry the work through until the end of January, when it is hoped that communications will have been reestablished.
The J.D.C. office here also reported that its two representatives in Shanghai, Laura Margolis of Pittsburgh and Manuel Siegel of Boston, have cabled that they are safe and well.
