A $50, 000 gift to the Jewish National Fund, and three “living legacy” contributions, totaling $128, 000, to Histadrut Development Corporation, were announced here today by the respective West Coast leaders of the two organizations.
The gift to the JNF, according to Benjamin H. Swig, president of the West Coast branch of the Fund, is the largest single contribution ever made in the history of the JNF on the West Coast. It was made by Samuel A, Fryer, a retired biochemist, living near here, at Santa Monica. The $50,000 will be used to establish a “Samuel A, Fryer Village” near Tel Aviv.
Mr. Fryer has contributed more than $1, 000, 000 in the last five years to Israeli institutions of higher learning. Among his beneficiaries have been the Weizmann Institute of Science, at Rehovot, and the Technion at Haifa. Last year, he made the largest single purchase of Israel bonds ever recorded on the West Coast.
The “living legacy” contributions to the Histadrut Development Foundation were announced by Israel I, Blumenthal, West Coast director of the organization. The gifts consist of one contribution of $65, 000 by Ben Sapkin; another of over $45, 000 by Abe L. Plotkin; and a third, of $18, 000, by Mrs. Minna Sherman. The funds, said Mr. Blumenthal, will be used for expansion of an agricultural trade school conducted in Israel by Histadrut, the Israel Federation of Labor.
