Jabotinsky Confers with Lithuanian President; No Economic Curbs, Jews Told

President Antanas Smetona today received Vladimir Jabotinsky world leader of the New Zionist Organization, and discussed with him the political situation and the national needs of Jewry Later Mr. Jabotinsky, who is here on a tour of Eastern Europe, conferred with Premier General Jonas Cernius on the immediate tasks of the Jewish national movement in Eastern Europe.

Finance Minister General Sutkus told a Jewish delegation that the Government did not intend to eliminate Jews from the nation’s economic life. He declared the Government recognized equality of rights and welcomed private initiative. The delegation had called to express apprehension with regard to the Government’s economic policy, spurred by a recent address by Premier Cernius before the Verslininkai, anti-Semitic merchants association, in which he pledged the Government’s support of its movement to oust Jews from Lithuania’s economic life.
