Jacob Epstein, the famous sculptor, is opening an exhibition of water colours of Old Testament characters and subjects at the Redfern Gallery next Tuesday.
One of the finest of all the water-colours, the “Daily Express” writes, is the conception of Saul and Jonathan: “They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions”. The irresistible power and force in the onward urge of those two bodies fully justifies the quoted title. There is so much masculine strength in those finely moulded limbs that one is anxious to know why Epstein gives to Saul and Jonathan the heads of dogs. These are questions, it says, which will be asked by most laymen who actually see the show and by more still who only see the reproductions. Epstein has leaped once more into the bull ring of heated controversy.
