A huge crowd today attended the funeral here of Jacob Hellman, World Jewish Congress leader and outstanding member of the Mapai, who died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 68.
Dr. Hellman attaired world fame as a deputy in the Latvian Parliament during the 1920’s and was one of Latvian Jewry’s top leaders until the fascist revolt there in 1934. He was the founder and editor of the Riga Jewish daily Frimorgen. In Warsaw, where he went in 1934, he established a Histadrut newspaper and served for five years as the World Jewish Congress representative in Poland.
In 1939 he migrated to Argentina where he became one of the Congress leaders for Latin America. A close collaborator of Chaim Arlosoroff and one of the major ideologocal spokesmen of the Labor Zionist movement, Dr. Hellman spent the last year of his life writing a book entitled “Jerusalem,” which is scheduled to be published within the next few days.
