Issa Al Issa, editor of Falastin, local Arab daily, has resigned his membership in the Palestine Arab Executive because of its “scandalous indifference” to the recent appeal by convicted Arab leaders against sentences for participation in the 1933 disturbances at Jaffa, and their ineptness in allowing these leaders to sign bonds instead of going to prison.
“Such cowardice on their part is inexcusable,” he wrote in his letter of resignation, attacking the leaders strongly for their spinelessness.
Other Arab leaders are expected to resign from the Executive because of dissatisfaction with its recent lukewarm policy. This is held in some circles to be the beginning of a split-up within the Arab national movement, signs of which were evident after the illegal demonstration of last October.
The Arab Youth Party, on the other hand, anxious to avoid the far-reaching results of a showdown, is trying to act as mediators and is expected to issue an explanatory statement as to why the convicted Arab leaders signed bonds promising to be on good behavior rather than to accepting the alternative of imprisonment.
