Yielding to the pressure of a demonstration staged yesterday by one hundred Arabs who gathered at the Jaffa City Hall demanding cancellation of the agreement with the Rutenberg Electric Works for the electrification of the city, the Jaffa municipality discussed the question. Jewish members of the City Council left the session, declaring discussion of the cancellation of the agreement with the Rutenberg company was illegal because the cocession to instal equipment to furnish electricity to the city was granted by the government.
The municipality, nonetheless, decided to send a delegation to the District Commissioner to demand abrogation of the agreement. Jaffa is principally an Arab city, the Jews living mainly in Tel Aviv, the all-Jewish city adjoining Jaffa.
Agitation that other municipalities abrogate their agreement with the Rutenberg company is being carried on by Arabs active in the anti-Jewish boycott movement.
