The Finnish government announced yesterday the appointment of Max Jakobson as Ambassador to Sweden. The Finnish diplomat, the son of a Helsinki Zionist committee member, had asked to be relieved of his previous post as Finland’s Ambassador to the United Nations after he failed to be elected Secretary General. Jakobson had been regarded for a time as the most likely candidate to succeed Secretary General U Thant who retired last year. His failure to win election was attributed in part to Soviet hostility. He was accused by the Russians of having expressed anti-Soviet views in a book he wrote on the Russo-Finnish war of 1940-41.
