Japan does not support the Middle East plan proposed ten days ago by United States Secretary of State John Foster Dulles but, instead, wants Israel to adhere to old United Nations resolutions “in the spirit of the Bandung Conference,” Mamoru Shigemitsu, Japanese Foreign Minister declared here prior to his departure for Tokyo yesterday.
At a press conference during his visit to UN headquarters, the Japanese Cabinet member, whose rank equals Mr. Dulles came out flatly as a staunch supporter of the Arab League’s contention that Israel must re-admit Arab refugees. relinquish any hold on Jerusalem, and follow other old UN resolutions which are conceded to be out-of-date by all neutral diplomats here Mr. Shigemitsu made his statement regarding Israel when questioned as to whether it is true, as reported by some American newspapers that he supported the Dulles solution to Middle East strife. Mr. Shigemitsu did add that Japan’s foreign policy aims at solution of all disputes by peaceful means and expressed his hope that such a policy could be applied to Israel.
