Jean Arent, formerly First Secretary in the Soviet Embassy in Paris, was appointed today by the Soviet government as Consul-General for the United States.
Mr. Arent, a Jew, is one of the ablest of the Soviet diplomats. He has been in the diplomatic service for many years. Recently he was the editor of the Journal de Moscow, a Soviet publication in the French language.
