The project put forward by the Jewish Communal Council for the establishment of a Jewish municipality in that part of Jerusalem which is purely Jewish is being discussed in Jewish circles here, while the action of the authorities in putting the plan into effect is awaited.
In the municipal elections which took place in Jerusalem in April 1927, the Jewish vote carried everything before it. The Jews had concluded an election agreement with the Arab parties, who undertook in return for the Jewish support at the polls to back up the Jewish demands in municipal affairs. The Jews formed a bloc among themselves, comprising all the Jewish parties in Jerusalem, including the Agudath Israel, enabling four Jews to be returned to the City Council. The Mayor of Jerusalem. Ragheb Bey el Nashashibi, leader of the moderate Arab party, received nearly as many votes from the Jews as from the Moslem and Christian voters combined. The four Jewish candidates, Isaac Ben Zwi, Isaac Eliashar, Haim Solomon and Eliah Shamah, were returned unopposed, Haim Solomon, one of the Jewish representatives, is Vice-Mayor of Jerusalem.
