Jerusalem Municipality Honors Sharett; Eshkol Lauds His Noble Qualities

Before an audience of 400 leaders in the Jerusalem Municipal Council chamber, Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive and former Premier and Foreign Minister, was awarded the freedom of the city. Mr. Sharett came to Jerusalem 58 years ago.

Among those participating in the ceremony were President Shazar, Premier Levi Eshkol, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, the Chief Rabbis, members of the Cabinet and of Parliament, members of the Jewish Agency executive and Supreme Court Justices.

Mayor Mordechai Ish Shalom of Jerusalem, Premier Eshkol and Dr. Goldmann paid tribute to Mr. Sharett, emphasizing his noble qualities and “his road filled with achievement in many fields.” Premier Eshkol said that “in honoring Sharett, Jerusalem honors herself.” Dr. Goldmann said that the former Premier “represents and incarnates Zionism at its best, a man of tremendous moral qualities.” Former Premier David Ben-Gurion sent a message from his retreat at Sed Boker. Responding, the former Premier recalled the early days of his life in Palestine.
