The pioneering immigration to Palestine 150 years ago of the disciples of the religious leader, the Gaon of Vilna, was marked here today when the Jerusalem municipality named a street to commemorate the famed sage and talmudic scholar. Mayor Gershon Agron affixed a sign designating “Chazon Zion Street.”
Descendants of the Vilna Gaon’s followers who sparked the religious immigration a century and a half ago, today include Supreme Court Justice Shneor Z. Cheshin, Professor Joel Joseph Rivlin of the Hebrew University, the president of the Tel Aviv District Court, Justice Nathan Barzakay and other notables from various parts of the country.
