Plans for the organization of an American chapter of the Beth Din Godol, equivatent to the religious magistracy of the ancient Sanhedrin, legal governing body for the Jews, got under way at a meeting of Hebrew scholars and attorneys last night at the office of Moses Wortman, 239 Broadway. An initial world meeting of the Beth Din Godol is planned in Palestine April 1.
A highlight of the meeting was the decision made by attending charter members to publish a periodical on Jewish law, which will print studies of Anglo-Saxon and American law and their relation to ancient Hebrew law, and to establish a legal faculty in Hebrew University.
Mr. Wortman, chairman of the Hebrew Movement committee of the Bronx, said that the organization when once fully established, will probably send delegates to the Palestine conclave.
Present last night were Professor Chaim Tchernowitz, of the Institute of Jewish Religion; Dr. Pinkus Churgin, of Yeshiva College; Dr. Michael Higger, of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Dr. Chaim Renis, who announced plans for the establishment of a faculty of law in Hebrew. University, Palestine.
