Menahem Ussishkin’s personality and idealism and the causes for the Jewish National Fund were discussed by Nathan L. Goldstein, chairman of the patrons of the Ussishkin Tribute Dinner Committee, during last night’s broadcast over Station WEVD on the weekly Jewish Daily Bulletin program.
“Funds raised in the Jewish communities throughout the world,” Mr. Goldstein declared, “through the Jewish National Fund, are being applied for acquisition, by purchase, of land areas upon which we have in the past decade seen the almost miraculous transformation of waste lands into gardens and of the desert into blossoming settlements.
“With the $16,000,000 raised, the Jewish National Fund has acquired hundreds of thousands of dunams of land upon which more than a hundred settlements have been established. These settlements have made the epic of the new Palestine which is now the object of admiration by the entire civilized world, and the ultimate dream of many of our brethren whose feet have become weary and who are sadly in need of a haven of refuge from oppression and persecution.
“THE IRON MAN”
“The personality whose rare idealism and incomparable energy, untiring courage and endless devotion have been the greatest factors in this achievement. is that of Menahem Ussishkin. He is the man who is sometimes being referred to as ‘The Iron Man’ of the Zionist movement and richly deserves the tribute which is now being paid to him by Jews all over the world on the occasion of his seventieth birthday anniversary.”
