Plans for a new project, calling for construction of 23 immigrant work villages and their transformation into agricultural settlements, at a cost of 15,000,000 Israeli pounds ($8,250,000), were announced here today by the Jewish Agency. The government Labor Ministry and the Jewish National Fund will participate with the Agency in the development of this scheme.
The plan calls for transforming the villages into agricultural settlements within a period of two to three years. A total population of 6,000 will be accommodated in the new developments. Each family will receive 18 to 20 dunams of orchard land, as well as poultry runs.
Eight of the villages will be built among the Judean hills to accommodate 401 families. Fifteen other villages, along the Lebanese frontier, and in the environs of Safed and Nazareth, will accommodate 801 families. During the first two years of their life in the new areas, immigrants will be paid by the Jewish National Fund for preparing the soil for agricultural use. The Labor Ministry will pay for the construction of the needed new housing.
