The continued function of the American Zionist Council as the united voice of the Zionist movement in the United States was emphasized here last night by Moshe Sharett and Louis Pincus, chairman and treasurer, respectively, of the Jewish Agency, addressing a meeting of the Council’s executive committee.
Recognizing the critical period in the affairs of the Zionist movement, as well as the general situation in the Middle East, Mr. Sharett called upon the Council “to galvanize its constituent Zionist organizations in meeting the challenge to the Zionist movement by giving vigorous direction to American Jewish life. No single Zionist organization can do this,” he said, “only a united movement can accomplish this task, and the American Zionist Council is the recognized instrument for this purpose.”
“Not only must the Council maintain the local Zionist Councils existing in the main cities of the United States, but it must do all in its power to stimulate their growth,” Mr. Sharett stated.
Continuing the same theme, Mr. Pincus urged the American Zionist Council to take the leadership and seize the present opportunity to make Zionist issues crystal clear to the American Jew. “There are far more committed Zionists in the United States,” he said, “than even the leaders realize. A united movement, coordinated, directed and stimulated by the American Zionist Council must take precedence over the goals of its separate parts.” Rabbi Irving Miller, American Zionist Council chairman, presided at the meeting attended by the top leadership of all the Zionist organizations.
