As the plenary session here of the Jewish Agency went into its second day today it became evident that the body was divided into two basic camps over the future function and activities of the Agency.
One side favored unchanged continuation of the work and activities of the Agency and the world Zionist movement, while the other favored a compromise between this view and that of Premier David Ben Gurion, who insists that the work of immigration and colonization must be handled by the Israel Government with the assistance of the Agency because the job is too big for any agency less than a government.
At today’s session, which was presided over by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, the suggestion was made by Dr. Izhak Gruenbaum that the budget of the Jewish Agency be reduced by $30,000,000. This proposal met with opposition on the part of Berl Locker, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, and other members. Among the other major budgetary points discussed was the question of raising funds for the removal of Jews from Iraq to Israel, a project for which special funds are needed outside of the regular budget.
