The appointment of Field Marshal Viscount Sort as High Commissioner for Palestine was welcomed today by the Hebrew press and a Jewish Agency spokesman. The Agency representative said that “in all matters connected with the war effort, we will help Viscount Gort to the utmost of our ability. As for the rest, we will judge him by his actions and policy.”

At the same time, Auni Bey Abdul Hadi, spokesman for the Arab extremist groups, said that “the Arabs hope that Viscount Gort will not tolerate the existence of Jewish military organizations foolishly aiming to force the British Government’s hand. We hope he will finally succeed in uprooting the evil of organized Jewish terrorism.”
