The Jewish Agency Immigration and Absorption Department will soon open an immigrant transit home in Beisan, in the Jordan Valley. The home will serve immigrants arriving in Ben Gurion Airport who do not have any apartments ready. It will be able to accommodate up to 20 persons. Because of the acute shortage of apartments for new immigrants, the Jewish Agency has turned several of its absorption centers into transit homes, serving as temporary housing until permanent housing is completed.
The shortage will be somewhat relieved in June, when the Immigration and Absorption Department will end the lease of 110 hotels which served as absorption centers. At the same time three new absorption centers will be opened in Tiberias, Dimona and Netivot. Another center, to be opened in July in Nehora, will serve those immigrants who want to join moshavim. The Immigration and Absorption Department currently operates more than 100 absorption centers, housing 15,000 immigrants.
