The question of food and provisions is becoming acute for the Jews of Jerusalem, owing to the refusal of Jewish housewives to buy their supplies from Arabs, fearing foul play. The scarcity of fish, meat and vegetables is felt already, and unless means of self-provisioning are devised, actual famine is feared. On Friday night the meal in the leading Jewish hotel here consisted only of rice.
At the same time the Arabs in the countryside around Jerusalem are acutely feeling the pinch of poverty because they cannot sell their produce. Great excitement prevailed last Friday after the services in the Mosque of Omar over the fact that the villagers are unable to dispose of their products.
Perhaps the same Arabs who a fortnight before were incited against the Jews now quarrelled among themselves. Thirteen sheiks decided to address a letter to the Grand Mufti declaring that if the Jewish boycott is not discontinued, the Arab villages will be exposed to starvation.
