“The Jewish boy in New York City–and the better class Italian boy–have a zeal for study that puts to shame the boy of native American parentage,” Dr. Avery W. Skinner of the New York State Department of Education told an audience of Academic Princpals in convention here.
Referring to the “complacency of students in high school these days,” Dr. Skinner said too many “seem satisfied with a passing grade and this attitude is more marked today in the country schools than in the city schools, and particularly among the American born, to our shame it must be said.”
