Jewish Braille Institute Day was observed today at Expo ’67 honoring the achievements of the Jewish Braille Institute of America. Principal participants in the observance were Sam Steinberg, of Montreal, president of the Foundation for Judaism, sponsor of Expo’s Pavilion of Judaism; Judge Emil N. Baar, of New York, president of the Institute; and Dr. Jacob Freid, the Institute’s executive director.
The formal program on Jewish Braille Institute Day included a demonstration of some of the activities carried on by the Institute. This consisted of the transcribing of Braille; a recording session in Yiddish, with a playback of the voice recorded; a brief excerpt from one of the Institute’s recordings for the blind of the entire collected works of 16 volumes by Sholem Aleichem; and a reading of the Haftorah by a blind boy whose Bar Mitzvah was made possible through the Institute.
