All future training of the Jewish Brigade will take place in Egypt, with the exception that officers will be trained in England, Brigadier Ernst Frank Benjamin, commander of the Brigade, told a press conference today.
Benjamin said he did not know when the Brigade would go into combat, stressing that preparing a unit for battle was a long and arduous process. Replying to questions, he said that he had no information as to the post-war future of the outfit.
The Brigade commander told reporters that he was here to speed recruiting for the unit so that it may be brought to full strength as soon as possible. He said that his men are “extremely fit and keen” and that none of them have absented themselves without leave.
He described the intensive cultural activities in which the Brigade members engage, disclosing, at the same time, that Hebrew was used largely in giving orders to the men and in the various drills, but that English was used in communications with headquarters and other units.
