High Jewish officials in Italy who were ousted from their positions as a result of Mussolini’s racial laws, are now being recalled to their former posts, especially in the Army and Navy, it was reported here today.
Among those who have received orders to hold themselves in readiness for military duty are the Jewish admiral, Aldo Ascoli and General-Inspector of the Navy Umberto Ogliese. Admiral Ascoli was commander of the Italian naval forces in the Aegean, prior to his dismissal because he was a Jew. Colonel Hugo Madena, chief of staff of the Army Corps at Bologna, who was among the Jewish high military officials removed from their posts by Mussolini, also received instructions this week to report for service at the end of the month. Admiral Paolo Maroni, former commander of the Fourth Naval Division, who was the first Jew to be dismissed from the service by Mussolini, is also expected to be recalled to the fleet.
Several municipalities in Italy have, during the last few days, dismissed fascist teachers from their schools and replaced them with reinstated Jewish teachers. No Jewish professor, however, has been reinstated as yet in any of the Italian universities.
Italian Government officials are continuing to confer with Jewish leaders in Rome on judicial problems in connection with the restoration of “Aryanized” Jewish property to the Jewish owners as well as on problems connected with the restoration of full rights to Italian Jews. In practice, the anti-Jewish laws are no longer enforced. Officially they have not as yet been abrogated, though the Rome radio and the Italian press have reported their abrogation.
